Common ADHD Symptoms in Children

ADHD presents differently in every child. There are three main types — inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Dr. Anwar evaluates all three.

🎯 Inattentive Type (ADD)

  • Frequently makes careless mistakes in schoolwork
  • Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
  • Doesn't seem to listen when spoken to directly
  • Fails to follow through on instructions; doesn't finish tasks
  • Easily distracted by unrelated stimuli
  • Often forgets daily activities and loses belongings

⚡ Hyperactive-Impulsive Type

  • Fidgets with hands/feet or squirms in seat constantly
  • Leaves seat when expected to remain seated
  • Runs or climbs in situations where it is inappropriate
  • Unable to play quietly; always "on the go"
  • Talks excessively; blurts out answers before question is complete
  • Has difficulty waiting their turn; interrupts others
Important: All children occasionally show some of these behaviors. ADHD is diagnosed only when symptoms are persistent (6+ months), appear in multiple settings (home AND school), and cause significant impairment. Only a physician like Dr. Anwar can properly diagnose ADHD — self-assessment tools are not a substitute for professional evaluation.

ADHD FAQ

Answers to the questions Dr. Anwar hears most from parents about ADHD in children.

ADHD can be diagnosed as early as age 4, though it's most commonly identified during the elementary school years when academic demands increase. Dr. Anwar evaluates children of all ages — from preschool through teenagers. Earlier diagnosis and treatment generally leads to better outcomes.
No — medication is not required and is not always the right choice. Treatment plans are individualized. For some children, especially younger ones, behavioral therapy and environmental modifications may be the first approach. For others, medication combined with behavioral strategies produces the best results. Dr. Anwar will discuss all options with you thoroughly before any treatment begins.
There's no single test for ADHD. Diagnosis involves: a clinical interview with the parent and child, validated rating scale forms (Vanderbilt or Conners) completed by both parents and teachers, a review of school performance and behavior history, and a physical exam to rule out other medical causes. The process typically takes 1–2 appointments. Dr. Anwar reviews everything together to form a complete clinical picture.
Yes, this is actually common — especially with the inattentive type of ADHD. Home environments often have fewer demands for sustained attention, while structured school settings reveal the deficit more clearly. That said, for a diagnosis, symptoms typically need to be present in at least two settings. The teacher input forms we use in our evaluation capture school behavior specifically.
Some stimulant medications can cause minor, temporary slowing of growth velocity in some children. Dr. Anwar monitors height and weight at every follow-up visit specifically because of this. In most cases, any growth impact is small and children catch up over time. The decision to use medication always involves weighing benefits against potential risks — and Dr. Anwar discusses this with every family.
In most cases, yes. ADHD evaluation and management visits are covered by most major insurance plans as a medical service. KAMD Pediatrics accepts most major private insurance, Medicaid/CHIP, Tricare, and other plans. We recommend calling your insurance company to confirm your specific coverage before your appointment.
Absolutely — ADHD affects girls just as much as boys, though it often presents differently and gets missed or misdiagnosed. Girls are more likely to have the inattentive type (daydreaming, quiet struggles with focus) rather than the more obvious hyperactive-impulsive type. Dr. Anwar is experienced in recognizing ADHD in all children, regardless of how it presents.
